Higher Certificate in Social Enterprise & Community Development - Year 2

Jointly delivered by the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and EQUAL Ireland, this Higher Certificate is designed to build leadership skills in the social enterprise and community development sectors. Combining key theoretical insights with real-world application, the programme prepares individuals to contribute meaningfully to their communities and drive positive social change. It supports adult learners from underrepresented and under-resourced communities through a flexible and inclusive approach to higher education.

The programme is built around three core themes:  

  • Social
  • Community
  • Business

Delivery


Designed to fit around work and other commitments, this part-time course is delivered fully online, with workshops held two evenings per week. Continuous assessment and one in-person examination required – See Course Modules below for exam details.

 

Course Modules

Marketing Management in a Digital Age – 5 ECTS Credits
This module introduces essential concepts and practical skills for marketing in today’s digital environment, with a focus on social enterprise and community development.
Learn to: evaluate the impact of digital marketing on communities, social enterprises, and individual well-being.

Social Impact Strategies and Skills – 5 ECTS Credits
This module uses practical exercises and real-world case studies to build the skills needed to create meaningful social change.
Learn to: map stakeholders for effective social impact planning, develop facilitation and teamwork skills for community development and social enterprises   

Human Resource Management – 10 ECTS Credits – (continuous assessment and in-person exam)
Gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of human resource management in organisational success, particularly within small social enterprises.
Learn to: distinguish between Personnel Management and HRM, design training and development programmes and  enhance employee engagement

Applied Sociology – 10 ECTS Credits
Explore the foundations of sociology and apply core concepts to contemporary social issues and institutions.
Learn to: examine social norms and their influence on behaviour; analyse social divisions and inequalities relating to class, ethnicity, and gender.

Operations Management – 5 ECTS Credits
Discover the core elements of business operations, including sourcing, production, and delivery in complex global environments.

Social Enterprise and Innovation – 10 ECTS Credits
Explore the principles of social entrepreneurship and innovation, including business planning, financing, and impact analysis.
Learn to: identify and develop innovative solutions to social and environmental challenges

Integrated Learning Project – 15 ECTS Credits
This capstone module brings together knowledge and skills through the development of a practical social impact project.
Learn to: create a social impact strategy using the Theory of Change; set measurable objectives and outcomes; map stakeholders and identify challenges; apply research methods; use facilitation and conflict-resolution techniques; evaluate ethical and cultural considerations; reflect critically in a comprehensive report.

Entry Requirements

  • Graduates of the Certificate in Enterprise and Community Development
  • Applicants holding other relevant Level 6 qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Applicants who do not meet the standard entry requirements may be eligible to apply through the TUS Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process,

Fees & Funding

The fee is €2500 (instalment plan available) and SUSI funding is available for eligible applicants
