Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Enterprise and Community Development
Jointly delivered by the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) and EQUAL Ireland, this Level 8 Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Enterprise and Community Development is a strategically designed programme addressing a critical and evolving need in Irish society: the empowerment of adult learners and the development of community and social enterprise leadership capacity at local and national levels
The programme is designed to meet the growing demand for highly skilled professionals who can lead and innovate in the social, community and business sectors. The programme offers an advanced level of academic challenge, combined with practice, real world application to equip learners with the leadership and management skills need to make a meaningful impact in today’s complex societal and community landscapes
The programme is built around three core themes:
Designed to fit around work and other commitments, this part-time course is delivered fully online, with workshops held two evenings per week. Continuous assessment and two in-person examinations required – See Course Modules below for exam details.
Research Methods – 5 ECTS credits
In this module, you will explore the theory and practice of social research, focusing on qualitative and quantitative approaches. You will develop skills in research design, literature reviewing, data collection, and ethical practice, and learn how research can support decisions in community, enterprise, and organisational settings.
Social Enterprise Development and Finance – 10 ECTS credits
In this module, you will examine social entrepreneurship and learn how social enterprises are developed, planned, and financed. You will analyse opportunities and challenges in starting ventures and evaluate the role and impact of social enterprise within communities and wider society.
Leading & Managing Organisation – 10 ECTS credits
In this module, you will develop your understanding of leadership, strategic management, and organisational behaviour. You will explore change management, HRM, teamwork, and continuous improvement, and learn how leadership, culture, and vision influence organisational performance and success.
Community Development Structures and Governance – 5 ECTS credits – (continuous assessment and in-person exam)
In this module, you will explore organisational structures within the community development sector, including cooperatives and non-profits. You will examine governance, legal frameworks, and ethical issues, and understand how effective governance supports accountability and sustainable community outcomes.
Community Youth Work Approaches and Principles – 5 ECTS credits – (continuous assessment and in-person exam)
In this module, you will explore youth and community work practice in Irish and international contexts. You will examine theory, policy, participation, and funding structures, and develop your understanding of how to support youth engagement and community-based work effectively.
Mentoring, Facilitating for Community & Business Leaders – 10 ECTS credits
In this module, you will develop practical skills in mentoring, facilitation, communication, and group dynamics. You will learn how to support decision-making, manage conflict, and facilitate groups effectively, while reflecting on and improving your own leadership and professional practice.
Community/Workplace Research Project – 15 ECTS credits
In this capstone module, you will complete an independent 6,000–8,000-word research project in a community or workplace setting. You will apply your learning through real-world research, demonstrate ethical practice, and critically reflect on your academic, personal, and professional development.
